Blast from the Past

The “Secrets” of Evermore

Secret of Evermore Box Cover

‘The Secret of Evermore’ was my first title as a full fledged dev. Surprisingly I hadn’t heard of Squaresoft when I took the job. Mostly because I was a PC guy and the console market was alien to me. I learned a lot from that experience.  Even with the death-march crunch we endured on SoE I will always remember fondly that  team and that time in my career.

The game was originally called ‘Evermore’ — We found the name anonymously written on a white board in the lunch room and everyone immediately knew that this was what we should call our game. I learned years later that it was Jeremy Soule , our 19 year old Audio Designer that wrote ‘Evermore’ on that board.  He’s now a world class composer and a legend in the game industry. He’s just one of the many legends that came from that team.

Squaresoft Japan had given us the challenge of building a ‘Secret of Mana’ styled game that had an “American flavor” — We built the game from the ground up (engine and all). Most people thought we used the ‘Secret of Mana’ engine, but if you play the games back to back you will see the differences.

Monster Spawn — they like picnic spots too!

Hello folks,

I am continuing my quest to do more artwork, and have generated a piece for an art test that I am pretty happy with. It is my take on contextualizing a monster spawn point for an online RTS (Real Time Strategy) game… or in plain English, a cool monster hangout under a tree. Please let me know what you think!

a cool monster spawn point.

Featured Art

Project: MyWorld

Used in the style guide as an example of “Cute Proportions” There were hundreds of vehicles built from this style guide. A lot of thought and research went into this image. The proportions are based on the golden ratio, and the construction of the truck was based heavily on scientific studies of what visual cues make something cute.

We were keen to keep localization to a minimum. I visualized ways of communicating without words, and some camera independent control methods. This was fun!

SAW the Video game:

At the other end of the style spectrum; While at Zombie Studios, I was the AD for SAW the game. During that time I did several concepts of the “Pig-head” enemies. These are a couple of examples, starting with “The Twins”.

Stuff I drew for coworkers

Every now and then a coworker would request some piece of art for a newsletter or wiki page… these are little pieces I did for two such occasions. “The clock of doom” was part of a daily report from production, and the Texas Australia image was for our live team that was made up entirely of people from Texas and Australia. They wanted a banner for a newsletter… “Things from Texas and Australia that can kill you”.

Zombie Sketch

I decided to try my hand at a zombie… All this job search craziness has left me with some time to practice… Here are two images… one at 2 hours, and the other at 4 hours sketching time. These were done in Painter 11.

Tony Jaa Portrait

This was a practice piece to do a freehand head portrait of a character from several photo sources. This took about three hours.

Under the Bridge

Here is a B&W practice piece I did to brush up on my perspective skills… I wanted to visualize what a building built in to the foundation of a bridge might look like.
